Healing the Wounds Connected to Your Family
Trauma, addiction, and dysfunctional patterns can be passed down through the generations. Families create their own culture with implicit and explicit rules, values, customs, beliefs and acceptable or unacceptable behaviors. A person develops within this culture and adapts to this family system. Therapy can be a place to explore the culture you were born into, and developed within, so that you can know yourself both fully and consciously. When you leave your family and enter the world, you can often respond to the world as you did in the world of your family, which can, at times, be limiting or elicit painful, unresolved dilemmas.
Differentiation from your family of origin is key in becoming your whole Self. Family rules can interfere with a person’s ability to individuate and freely create their own nuclear family environment. To understand our present, we must first understand our past. If you are struggling with relationships in your life, understanding your primary relationships within your family of origin can liberate you with these struggles.
Change Can Trigger Feelings of Vulnerability.
Change can be experienced as a disruption to the norm and life’s predictability, but with change comes new possibility. Family life cycle transitions can create difficulty for people, even when they are a hopeful positive transition. Some of these naturally occurring transitions that affect family dynamics include:
- Merging families
- Age 30 > transition
- Mid-life crisis
- Empty Nest
- Blended Families
- Loss of a loved one
Working with a therapist can help you develop insight on repetitive patterns of your family of origin and assist you in making conscious choices when trying to build a healthy, fulfilling family environment. At Midtown Marriage and Family Therapy, we take a closer look at internal family systems and can work with you individually, with a sibling(s), or extended family to promote growth and conflict resolution.
Our pre-marital work can support couples’ practice in effective communication as they vision their future together. We can also help you create a plan that works best for you and your partner with issues emerging from interfaith or intercultural differences.
With your therapist, you can explore the unhealthy familial cycles in safe environment with the goal of cultivating awareness to educate and empower you to break free from them, and to embrace the possibility of ending cycles of violence. The purpose of family oriented work is to validate your struggles, normalize phase of life challenges, facilitate improvement in communication, as well as, assist you in establishing appropriate boundaries to foster individuation from your family, and therefore; more authentic connection to your family.
