NYC Counselors, Counseling that tends to the mind, body, and soul.
“It’s also helpful to realize that this very body that we have, that’s sitting right here right now…with its aches and its pleasures…is exactly what we need to be fully human, fully awake, fully alive.”
Our Bodies Signals Have Become Lost
We’re in our heads a lot. As we grow into adulthood, our body’s signals become lost to us: hunger, fatigue, headaches or stomachaches become things we are able to ignore, push through, forget about. We hear a lot about the mind/body connection but it’s sometimes hard to understand how it plays out in daily life. We may experience ailments, large and small, which we assume are affected by stress but its easier to treat our symptoms medically than to develop awareness around our bodies’ signals. We tend to be focused on what our brain is telling us more than what our stomach is saying.
Psychotherapy brings back the focus to our body and its wisdom.
More and more, therapists are bringing the focus back to the body and its wisdom. And it’s not just daily stress. Our most primal experiences and feelings, especially those associated with early childhood trauma, also reside in the body. Therapeutic change and learning new ways of behaving is impossible if it doesn’t get enacted through the body on a physical level. Our therapist are trained to think in terms of psychic pain, attachment trauma and daily stress as cellular, in other words as having not just an effect on the brain but also the body.
For many New Yorkers–for everyone–there is an expectation that therapy is a place for talk and that talking alone is sufficient to enact change in relationships, habits and behaviors. But talk is not enough. To use the therapy process to bring an increased awareness to breathing habits, for example, is recommended.
For some clients, body awareness might mean a meditation in which attention is focused on tension spots in the chest or stomach. For others it could be gentle movements within the therapy room, meant to get closer to the felt experience of a traumatic event. With anger, for instance., we see that without body awareness, insight into reasons for anger are not sufficient. Conscious breathing, progressive relaxation and learning ways of caring for and nurturing your physical well being all play a role in anger management, as well as problems such as eating disorders and other body image disturbance, addictions, anxiety and depression.
