Counseling and Psychotherapy in NYC for Depression, Chronic Sadness, Low Mood
“That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end.” —-Elizabeth Wurtzel.
Depression affects one in 10- or nearly 15 million adults in the United States. Though it can be a normal reaction to have feelings of sadness, loneliness, or grief as part of our human experience, sometimes these feelings can become overwhelming, persistent and prolonged and can interfere with our daily functioning. Sometimes individuals may also feel a sense of being emotionally stuck or numb, finding it difficult to experience a range or shift in their emotional state.
You might be living with depression if you display any of the below symptoms.
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
- Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
- Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
- Irritability, restlessness
- Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
- Overeating or appetite loss
- Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems
- Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings
- Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts

Treatment Depression Requires a Holistic Approach
Whether dealing with depression has been a short or long term issue, the therapists at Midtown MFT will assist you on understanding your depression and how it manifests in your daily life. We take a mind/body approach and explore your physical state as well as emotional state.
From an emotional place:
We will explore your past and address the unconscious or underlying drives or patterns of your depression, and how it may be affecting you today. Through this weaving of past and present, as well as providing pragmatic tools for daily living, we are committed to guiding our clients in viewing depression as a temporary stay, not a life long sentence. Many of us carry our wounds and trauma around as chronic sadness and just can’t seem to find a way out of it. We know there is a way out and will work with you to find your path.
From a physical place:
Many untreated illness and disease, mineral deficiencies, prolonged use of alcohol and substances, and chemical deficiencies in our brain can cause symptoms of depression. We will work with you around resourcing yourself both with a medical doctor and psychiatrist to determine if there is something inside your body that needs tending to.
